Astro-Parenting: How Astrology Can Help Strengthen Your Relationship with Your Children
Astro-parenting has helped inform my relationship with my 8-year-old and can help you strengthen your relationship with your children too. Read on for a breakdown of how it may help improve relationships with those most important to you.
Astrology is a way to gain insight. This insight can be applied to many areas of life, parenting and caregiving included.
Astrology can give us clues about our child’s temperament, learning style, emotional needs, communication style, mental processing and desires. By looking at our child’s natal chart (a snapshot of where the planets were positioned when they took their first breath, also known as a birth chart or astrology chart), we can get an elevated perspective about how they show up in and interact with the world.
This information is helpful for making informed decisions around themes like what educational experiences they may benefit from, what types of toys or stories they may enjoy, what types of extracurricular activities they may gravitate toward and how to help them navigate their emotions and feelings.
Interpreting your child’s natal chart
It’s important to note that this is not about needing to change or manipulate behaviors. Working with our child’s natal chart is about learning to understand their souls and recognizing helpful ways to help guide them.
“We need to take care that we don’t tell our child who they are before they have been given an opportunity to explore that for themselves.”
That said, understanding your child’s natal chart can help you gain wisdom and insight into how to best equip them to explore themselves and the world they are a part of. Giving our children the right tools not only feels empowering to us but helps them feel empowered too.
We can also overlay our own natal charts and note how the two interact with each other. This can also be done with other caregivers and siblings. Taking this additional step offers deeper insight into areas where there may be tension and/or understanding between the two charts or individuals. This has helped me personally during times of transition. Looking at our natal charts has helped me prioritize where to focus and channel my energy during the ever-changing seasons of parenting.
Applying this to real life
My child is now 8 (he’s an August Leo), and we have been homeschooling since he was 5. Once I applied the knowledge I learned from his natal chart, I was able to cater our curriculum and routine to fit his communication and learning style. This has also helped to create healthy boundaries, minimize arguments and establish a general baseline.
For example, he understands that if I am in my office on a Zoom meeting, it’s not a great time to ask questions about my top five favorite foods. Instead, he has been guided to see if he can find the answer first, or write it down and we can talk about it later. Then, at the end of each night, we come together and chat about our day. During this time, we are able to cover any unanswered questions. Doing things this way has helped to minimize homeschooling and work-from-home parent overstimulation while also carving a space for my son’s needs. With the heightened level of stress I was feeling before applying an astrological perspective to our lives in this way, I don’t know that I would have had the brain capacity to come up with this system.
